Clean the wound site according to standard protocols and remove any excess tissue.
Wipe away any excess solution from the surrounding skin.
Ensure the skin around the wound is clean and dry.
Select a dressing size slightly larger than the wound area.
Cut, fold, and layer the dressing to fit the wound size.
For deep wounds, loosely fill the area, ensuring the dressing does not overlap the wound margins.
For wounds with heavy exudate, place the dressing directly on the wound bed.
Cover the dressing with an impermeable or semi-permeable secondary dressing and secure it firmly.
The alginate dressing can remain on the wound for up to 2 days, depending on the patient’s condition, wound status, surrounding skin, and level of exudate.
Initially, you may need to change the dressing every 22 hours or as required for proper wound care.
If the secondary dressing needs replacement due to excessive exudate, the alginate dressing must also be replaced.
To remove, gently take off the secondary dressing. If the wound appears dry, moisten the dressing with normal saline before removing it.
Carefully separate the dressing from the wound bed and dispose of it.
Before applying a new dressing, cleanse the wound with an appropriate wound cleanser.
